Drainage Installation — Case Study
A Fluvanna County landowner had chronic standing water across 3 acres of pasture after every rain event. We installed a primary drainage ditch, two culverts under the farm road, and a French drain along the low side of the property to redirect water to a natural outlet.
The property had no defined drainage path. Water from an uphill neighbor's field sheet-flowed across the pasture and pooled in the low corner, making roughly an acre of grazing land unusable for days after any significant rain. The farm road crossing the property had no culverts, which was backing water up further.
We started by identifying the natural drainage outlet at the property's low corner and working backward to design a gravity-fed system. The excavator cut a primary ditch from the high side to the outlet, with a consistent 1% grade throughout. We installed 18-inch corrugated culverts under both road crossings, backfilled and compacted the road surface, and added a perforated French drain pipe along the fence line where water was entering from the neighbor's field.
The standing water problem was eliminated. The owner reported that after the first significant rain following completion, the pasture drained completely within 4 hours. The previously unusable low corner is now dry enough for grazing within a day of rain.
