Before & After: Forestry Mulching in Mineral, VA

Sometimes the best way to explain what forestry mulching does is to just show it.

This property in Mineral, VA came to us after a microburst — downed trees, broken limbs, and storm debris scattered across the backyard. The owner wanted it cleaned up without the smoke, sparks, and burn-permit requirements of open pile burning, and without a mess left behind.

What We Were Working With

The before photo tells the story. A backyard full of storm-wrecked trees — some snapped, some uprooted, root balls torn out of the ground, and limbs and debris tangled across the whole yard. Storm damage is a different job than routine clearing: the material is unpredictable, much of it is too large or too tangled for the mulcher, and the owner is often dealing with a property they can barely walk through.

The challenge with a cleanup like this is the mix. Some of the downed wood is perfect mulcher material — limbs, brush, and smaller trunks that grind straight into a clean mulch layer. The rest — large trunk sections, root balls, and debris the machine cannot take — has to be loaded and hauled off-site. A job like this needs both approaches, not just one.

One Machine, One Pass

We brought in the Case TV450B tracked skid steer with the disc mulcher attachment. Working across the property, the machine cut, ground, and processed every mulchable tree, limb, and brush pile in place — turning it into a clean mulch layer over the ground. The disc mulcher handles material up to about 8-10 inches in diameter in a single pass.

For everything the mulcher could not take — large trunk sections, root balls, and tangled storm debris — we loaded it and hauled it off-site. Then a full cleanup pass to make sure nothing was left behind. No burning, no smoke, and no pile of unprocessed junk for the owner to deal with later.

The After

The result is what you see in the second photo: clean ground, open sight lines, and a yard that looks better than it did before the storm hit. The mulch that stays behind is not waste — it breaks down naturally over the following season, returning organic matter to the soil and suppressing regrowth in the process.

The owner put it best in her Google review: "It looks better now than it did before the storm!" That is the goal on every cleanup we do — leave the property better than we found it.

What This Costs in the Mineral Area

Forestry mulching in Louisa County typically runs $4,500-$9,000 per acre depending on tree density, average diameter, and terrain. Standard mulching leaves mulched material on-site. On this job, the material the mulcher could not process — root balls and large trunk sections — was hauled off, and that haul was spelled out in the written quote. The mulcher itself does its work in one pass.
